Rodney Clemons and Yamil Collazo – Bonsai Demo and Bonsai Club Meeting

To conclude a full weekend filled with bonsai during Natures Way Bonsai Nursery “Fall Open House” we had a club meeting Monday night. Sorry for this post being a week late. Our bonsai club “Susquehanna Bonsai Club” held our monthly meeting at Natures Way and was able to get a private demo/lecture from the weekends bonsai artists Rodney Clemons and Yamil Collazo before they departed back home. They worked on a collected Ponderosa Pine for the demo and then afterwards brought out a couple of rock plantings and bonsai they worked on over the weekend for us to view.

The following series of photos are of Rodney and Yamil working on a collected Ponderosa Pine. I’m not going to write in between the photos since it can all be explained before. They angled tree for possible fronts, pruned tree, wired tree, moved tree around more for possible fronts, styled branches and then that was it.

And here we are at the beginning of the end. The above tree is how the demo ended for now. There is still more work to be done but we were running short on time so they had to stop. The tree obviously will be finished at some point.

You can’t get any better quality deadwood on a bonsai than that of mother natures own work!

Old bark and more of mother natures deadwood.

The next couple photos are of a rock planting that Rodney did over the weekend. It consist of shimpaku junipers, Kingsville Boxwoods and various moss/ferns for ground coverings.

I love rock/landscape plantains 🙂

The following rock planting is from Yamil. I can’t remember the tree species that he used.

I love the shape of the rock.

Next is a San Jose Juniper that Yamil styled. At the time of the photos there were still a couple of branches that needed wired and placed.

Well that does it for this weekends fall open house. I would like to say thanks to both Rodney and Yamil for traveling all the way to Pennsylvania. They are extremely intelligent and friendly guys and would recommend that any other bonsai clubs out there ask for them to come to your club and teach. Thanks to Jim Doyle and Natures Way Bonsai Nursery for the fantastic bonsai filled weekend.

Unfortunately I was unable to attend the Saturday full of events. I had a prior commitment that mid morning plus it was my daughters high school homecoming dance and I was not going to miss that. Although, I was able to get a photo of my daughter and her homecoming date (also her boyfriend) to pose by my San Jose Juniper on their way to the car so Saturday was not completely bonsai free 😉

Isn’t she beautiful 🙂

Thanks for reading and following 🙂

    1. I get what your saying 😉 lol. But he is extremely polite with great manners. A real gentleman which is hard to find at that age or any age in this world. Treats her with respect which is the most important.
